DEVOTION OF THE CORD OF ST JOSEPH PART ONE

The Devotion of The Cord of St Joseph took its rise in Antwerp, Belgium in 1657, due to a miraculous healing effected by the wearing of this precious Girdle. An Augustinian nun was cured after her physicians had declared her death to be inevitable. This was related by the Bollandists and published in 1810.

The Cord of St Joseph was worn not merely for bodily ailments, but also as a preservative of the virtue of purity. On September 19, 1859, the new Formula of Blessing and permission for its solumn and private use was approved by the Sacred Congregation.

The Cord should be of cotton, wool, or linen, ending at one extremity in seven knots, indicative of the Joyous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries of the August Patriarch, The Blessed St Joseph. It is worn as a Girdle and ought to be blessed by a priest possessing powers to engird one with it. It should be noted that while Brother Andre was alive, he was responsible for making the Cords of St Joseph for the community. While doing so, he fashioned the end threads into a tassel of his own design.

How To Pray The Cord:

The Short Version:

Start with making the sign of the Cross:

In The Name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit. Amen.

There are Seven Knots on the Cord, and it is similar to using a Rosary or Chaplet. Just as you would pray using the Beads to count, so too, you pray using the Knots to count in a similar manner.

Firstly, you offer up to St Joseph the Joyful Mysteries and tell Him you are going to pray Seven Our Father's in honor of these Mysteries. You then pray on the Knots the Our Father prayer Seven times, or, One Our Father on each of the Seven Knots. That is, One Our Father for each individual Joyful Mystery.

Next, you go back to the beginning and offer up to St Joseph the Sorrowful Mysteries and tell Him you are going to pray Seven Hail Joseph's in honor of these Mysteries. You then pray again on the Knots only this time it is the Hail Joseph Seven times, or, One Hail Joseph on each of the Seven Knots. That is, One Hail Joseph for each individual Sorrowful Mystery.

Finally, you go back to the beginning and offer up to St Joseph the Glorious Mysteries and tell Him you are going to pray Seven Gloria Patri's in honor of these Mysteries. You then pray again on the Knots but this time it is the Gloria Patri Seven times, or, One Gloria Patri on each of the Seven Knots. That is, One Gloria Patri for each individual Glorious Mystery.

Prayer of Offering For The Seven Joyful Mysteries:
Our Blessed Father St Joseph, we offer up to You these Seven Joyful Mysteries, so dear to Your Most Pure Heart, in memory of all the time You spent with Our Lord and all the joys You had with Him. We especially remember the joy You had when Our Lord was born and You held Him in Your arms and close to Your Heart for the very first time, thus giving to You the joy of a Fatherhood so unique and wonderful. Be pleased, therefore, O Most Joyful Virgin Father of Jesus, to accept these Seven Our Father's in honor of these Mysteries which commemorate Your Joys. We ask all this through Jesus' Name. Amen.

Prayer of Offering For The Seven Sorrowful Mysteries:
Our Most Sorrowful and Loving Father St Joseph, we offer up to You these Seven Sorrowful Mysteries, which pierced Your Most Tender and Gentle Heart through, especially because of the 30 Years You spent on Mount Calvary contemplating the Passion and Death of Jesus, that Son of Yours, O Virgin Father, Who is the absolute Love of Your Life.
Be pleased to accept, O Joseph Most Sorrowful, these Seven Hail Joseph's in honor of these Mysteries which commemorate Your Sorrows. We ask this in the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer of Offering For The Seven Glorious Mysteries:
O, Our Most Glorious and Glorified Father St Joseph, we offer up to You these Seven Glorious Mysteries in honor of all the Glories You now have with Jesus. In particular, we honor Your Glorious Assumption into Heaven and Your most Glorious Coronation. We also honor You in all Your other Glories and we beg You most humbly to accept these Seven Gloria Patri's in honor of these Mysteries which commemorate Your Glories. We ask all this in the Name of Jesus, Who, loves to Glorify the One whom He called 'Father' on Earth and whom He still calls 'Father' in Heaven. Amen.

Our Father:

Our Father, Who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive thos who tresspass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Joseph:

Hail Joseph, Full of Grace,
The Lord is with Thee.
Blessed art Thou amongst men,
And Blessed is Thy Son Jesus.
Holy Joseph, Virgin Father of the Son of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Gloria Patri:

Glory be to The Father, and to The Son, and to The Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

In The Name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit. Amen.

Note from Donor: This is a beautiful prayer to be prayed for cures from bodily ailments and for the grace of purity. It also honors Joseph in His Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries.
This is as close as I can get to the original as I do not have the exact prayers of the Augustinian nun. I know that in the original prayer the Glorious Mysteries of Joseph were included.
I hope this brings showers of graces upon all those who pray this prayer.
