Ferdie Flores The Prayers
If you don't believe in the human race, if you don't believe in the power of prayer,
if you don't think we have the power to help each other, then you need to read about Ferdie Flores.
Brother Ferdie Flores is a missionary on the island of East Timor, a country that won its independence from Indonesia in 2002.
A rumor that Ferdie Flores was to be executed had
made its way around the Phillipines for a couple of days when someone there posted a simple and beautiful prayer for Flores here on October 29, 2005.
The rumor was in error, thank God. The response was awesome.
Like a bolt of electricity streaking around the globe, within hours of our automated mailing of the day's prayer requests, people on our list contacted people on their lists, who were in touch with prayer chains and prayer groups themselves.
Emails and text messages of the news flew all over the world and our site pages filled with hundreds of expressions of love.
No doubt thousands of prayers were said by thousands of people, many of whom had never heard of Ferdie Flores before, all of whom now communed in spirit....
from Finland, from England, from France, from Faroe Islands, from Australia, from the United States, from Spain, from Indonesia, from the Phillipines, from Germany, from Sweden, from Romania, from Russia, from South Africa, from New Zealand, from Fiji, from Norway, from Nigeria, from Wales, from Ireland, from Singapore, from Bosnia, from Uganda, from Scotland, from India, from Malaysia, from Ghana, from Sri Lanka, from Mozambique, Saudi Arabia, from the Czech Republic, from .... everywhere.
I imagine everyone else is wondering, who is Ferde Flores and how is he?
Ferdie Flores is an independent Baptist missionary church planner who has been in East Timor for some 4 years to establish indigenous churches. A Phillipino, he was the first Baptist minister to go into East Timor.
From Jose B. Cabajar:
Greetings in Christ's Wonderful Name! I've just talked minutes ago with Missionary Nelson Fernandez, one of our missionaries in
East Timor and he told me that he just had a good fellowship with Missionary Ferdie Flores yesterday. He confirmed that everyone of
them is okay though experiencing some persecutions. They are still preaching the Gospel of Christ faithfully and with courage. We
praise God for the special protection He is giving to His servants. They are also extending their heartfelt appreciation for those
people who are continuously praying for them in East Timor.
May God bless you all.
In Christ,
Pastor Jose B. Cabajar
ILAGAN BAPTIST CHURCH

I just got off the phone with the Faith Baptist Church in Japan which is a supporting church - not the sending church - of Missionary Ferdie Flores.
Pastor Robert Monteith informed me that although they only communicate monthly with Mr. Flores, the most recent news from the sending church in the Phillipines is that Ferdie is in good health and is completely safe, though because of non-governmental hecklers and religious dissenters trying to cause him trouble he is still in need of prayers.
I would have liked to learn exactly how he is... he had thousands of prayers sent his way. When I'm prayed for I feel it, and I imagine he had a sense of well-being, too, but Pastor Monteith is not at liberty to divulge any contact information and advises all to watch the web page for any updates. That URL is:

The prayer debacle started when someone in the Phillipines posted what was already a well-established rumor there, that Mr. Flores was scheduled to be executed. People on the site's prayer list were aware of this missionary and word spread quickly around the world. We have removed most of the Ferdie Flores posts and put them in a separate section because there were over 400! 400! Isn't that incredible?
Since we don't need to be worried about Brother Ferdie in as urgent a sense, we can marvel that we have an effective medium in light-a-candle.org for getting lots of prayers said in an urgent situation. Thank you to all who signed up on the prayer list!
I'm sorry I couldn't answer the mail that came in. I was at a conference with only my cell phone to check email. If you've never tried to compose messages on a cell phone keypad, imagine trying to pick up salt grains one at a time with a pair of pliers.
Thank you all for your messages, the URLs, the news and the prayers! God bless you all!
